Nail Polish Storage - Newly Decorated Melmers!

Hey guys!

Last weekend I took on the project of decorating my Melmers to make them more interesting and fun, but after I got sick, I had to put the project on hold and I finally finished it last night.

I used Rebecca's tutorial from when she decorated her own Melmers and when I went to get all the supplies I was even able to get the same colourful animal print paper that she got! It's so her but it's also so me so I just had to get it.

This project took a long time to complete because not only is it a long process to begin with, but I currently have 6 Melmers (4 and 1/2 of which are used for nail polish/supplies and the other 1 and 1/2 are used for makeup storage). However, the time I put into this was definitely worth it and I'm so happy with how they turned out!

So now that I'm satisfied with the look of my storage, I'm going to be showing you my nail polish collection in the very near future. This is my most requested post so it's in my plans to get that posted within the next week or two. In the meantime, enjoy the new look of my Melmers!

But first, remember that here's what Melmers look like undecorated:

I've since added 3 more Melmers (in place of the plastic drawers on the left side of my desk) so that's why you'll see 6 newly decorated Melmers.

Keep reading to see how they turned out!

Music Video Nail Art Series - Maroon 5 Moves like Jagger

Hey guys!

I've decided to continue with my music video inspired nail art designs and today I did a design based on my current fave song - Moves like Jagger by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera. This song has actually made it to my top played song of all time on iTunes so that should give you some idea of how much I like it.

I ended up being more inspired by the album cover for this single more than the actual music video but the graphic does also appear in the video.

It's a simple design but I thought it turned out pretty crisp and cool! Hope you like it too!

My inspiration:

My interpretation:

Products:
OPI Chip Skip
CND Stickey Base Coat
China Glaze - White on White (base)
OPI - I'm Indi-a Mood for Love (pink stripes)
China Glaze - Liquid Leather (black stripes)
Orly - Spark (yellow stripes)
Nicole by OPI - One Time Lime (green stripes)
Zoya - Robyn (blue stripes)
Seche Vite Top Coat

P.S. I added a new tab at the top of the page where you can go to request nail art designs that you'd like to see from me! At the moment I'm mostly looking for music video suggestions so I can continue with this series but I'm interested in all of your requests!

Tag Post - 15 Weird Facts

Hey guys!

I've come to really love tag posts so of course I had to participate in this newest one that's been going around. Let's get right to learning weird things about me!

1. What’s a nickname only your family calls you?
My Dad has called me Kay every once in a while but that's about the extent of my nicknames from my family.

2. What’s a weird habit of yours?
I've mentioned this on twitter before but for the last 7 years or so, I've fallen asleep every night watching re-runs of Friend's episodes on DVD. I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've seen the entire series.

3. Do you have any weird phobias?
I used to pretty afraid of ketchup. No joke. I've pretty much gotten over it in the last few years though.

4. What’s a song you secretly love to blast and belt out when you’re alone?
I'm always blasting music and singing, even when there's people around but the one song I'll really belt out is Love Song by Sara Bareilles. Oh, and Part of Your World from the Little Mermaid soundtrack. Duh.

5. What’s one of your biggest pet peeves?
When drivers don't use their signal lights. COME ON PEOPLE!

6. What’s one of your nervous habits?
Chewing on the inside of my cheeks - I'll usually only catch myself doing this during really stressful times such as final exams.

7. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
Left side is mine and the right side is the boyfriend's. However I find that anytime David isn't here, I sleep on his side.

8. What was your first stuffed animal and its name?
Uhhh, I have no idea what my first one was. I had a lot of Care Bears at one point though. I also had these two giant stuffed black cats that I won in colouring contests that a local drugstore held - I had two because I won the contest two years in a row. I was the best colour-er when I was a kid, haha.

9. What’s the drink you always order at Starbucks?
I've never had a drink from Starbucks - I don't like any hot beverages (except NeoCitran when I'm sick).

10. What’s a beauty rule you preach, but never actually practice?
Remove your makeup before you go to bed! I'm awful for this and almost always sleep with my makeup on.

11. Which way do you face in the shower?
If the shower has a removable shower head, I'll face towards the front of the shower. If it doesn't have a removable one, I'll face towards the back of the shower. See, I have really long and really thick hair so I have to make sure I maximize the amount of water that gets to my hair, which is why I prefer a removable shower head so I have all the control.

12. Do you have any weird body skills?
I wish I did but no, I don't. My boyfriend can pop his shoulder blades out and crush an empty pop can in between them. It's a fun party trick.

13. What’s your favorite comfort food that’s “bad”, but you love to eat it anyway?
Poutine for sure! Mmmmm.

14. What’s a phrase or exclamation you always say?
I was stuck on this question trying to think of something I say all the time but I honestly can't think of anything!

15. Time to sleep – what are you actually wearing?
Men's jogging pants and a old t-shirt - I'm ALL about being comfy when I'm sleeping.

I'm tagging everyone who takes the time to read this! Copy and paste the questions and answer them in the comments below or in your own blog post.

Hope you enjoyed learning some weird things about me!

Review & Swatches - OPI Serena Williams Glam Slam! US

Hey guys!

I'm just about back to feeling normal now and I wanted to thank you all for the well wishes in your comments and emails. I started working on a project last weekend before I got sick so hopefully I'll be able to finish it this weekend because I can't wait to show it to you!

In the meantime, I have some new OPI collections to show you in the next few days. I feel like I'm only reviewing OPI lately but so many OPI collections showed up at my supply store at the same time so now I have a back log of OPI stuff to review. The first of those that I'm going to show you is the last of the OPI and Serena Williams Glam Slam! duos.

Music Video Nail Art Series - Nicki Minaj Super Bass

Hey guys!

I'm still not feeling 100% better but I was finally feeling well enough last night to paint my nails.

I didn't mean for it to happen but it seems that I've got a kind of music video inspired nail art series happening right now since my last three nail art designs have all been inspired by music videos! I'm actually really enjoying this accidental series so if you have any suggestions for other inspiring music videos, please let me know in the comments or by email.

Today's nails are inspired by Nicki Minaj's video for her song Super Bass. The video is super colourful and fun and the outfit that caught my attention is this fish scale looking one so I tried to recreate it on my nails. Her vibrant green wig in this scene is also pretty rad so I wanted to incorporate that as well.

Here's a photo of my inspiration:

And here's my interpretation:

I couldn't decide which photo/angle showed the design off the best so I just went with all 3 photos I took!

Products:
OPI Chip Skip
CND Stickey Base Coat
China Glaze - Bahamian Escape (base)
Orly - Here Comes Trouble (base on ring fingers)
OPI - Who the Shrek Are You? (sponged over base)
China Glaze - Shower Together (sponged over base)
Orly - Glitz & Glamour (sponged over base)
China Glaze - Liquid Leather (scales)
Seche Vite Top Coat

My friend Rebecca also did a design inspired by this video but for a different outfit/scene so check out her design as well!

Review & Swatches - OPI Miss Universe Collection

Hey guys!

Sorry that I haven't been around for a couple of days but I caught a cold on Sunday and I've been miserable ever since. I've spent the past 2 days in bed drinking lots of NeoCitran/Buckley's and getting lots of rest. I started feeling just a little better late last night so I decided to snap a few swatch photos and write up a post for today. Hopefully I'll be feeling well enough tonight to paint my nails since my Gaga manicure is looking pretty ragged now.

I've been meaning to do a review/swatch post for this collection for a while now but other posts (and then illness) kept getting in the way.

Final Recommendations - Nfu-Oh Holographic Series

Hey guys!

So after the long process of reviewing and testing the Nfu-Oh Holographic Series of polishes, I have some final words/recommendations.

This post will also serve as an easy access page where you can find links to all of the swatches, reviews and wear tests for these polishes.

Review & Swatches - #61
Review & Swatches - #62
Review & Swatches - #63
Review & Swatches - #64
Nail Art Featuring #65
Review & Swatches - #65
Nail Art Featuring #66
Review & Swatches - #66

In terms of wear, I got an average of 4-5 days with these polishes and I never once had a single chip. However, tip wear did seem to occur more quickly than with other polishes/finishes.

As far as application goes, these were on the more difficult side to work with. But after trying out a few base coats, I found that the best combination was with OPI Chip Skip and CND Stickey Base Coat. This combination seemed to make my manicures last longer and it also helped with the troublesome application.

Keep in mind though that there is a specialized bast coat offered by Nfu-Oh to be used in conjunction with the Holographic Series - the Aqua Base. When I ordered my Nfu-Oh Holos the Aqua Base wasn't in stock so I was unable to test it to see if it was helpful with the application. But from what I hear, this base coat is definitely helpful so if you're planning to get any of these polishes, I would suggest picking up a bottle of the Aqua Base as well.

I absolutely love all 6 of these colours but if I had to pick favourites, I would pick #66 as my top favourite and #'s 61 and 65 are in pretty close running for my second favourite. If I had to choose a least favourite it would be #62 but only because I don't think it works as well with my skin colour as some of the others do. #'s 63 and 64 are both gorgeous but like I mentioned in my original review for #64, the two are a little too similar.

Something I didn't mention in my original reviews is that a common misconception with these polishes is that top coat dulls the holographic effect - it doesn't. When you first apply the top coat, it dulls the effect completely but as soon as it starts to dry, the holo effect returns. So don't skip top coat when you're wearing these because your mani definitely won't last as long.

One other thing I should mention is that these are VERY easy to remove. They basically come off with one swipe of remover!

Overall, I'm very pleased with these holo polishes by Nfu-Oh and I would definitely recommend them.

Nfu-Oh polishes are sold by this online retailer and they will run you $12.50 US or $13.82 CAD. All 6 polishes from the Holographic Series as well as the Aqua Base are currently in stock but this probably won't last too long so stock up now if you've been wanting any of these.

I hope these reviews have been helpful for you guys and I hope the time I put into the wear tests was worth it!

Which Nfu-Oh Holo is your favourite? Will you be getting any while they're in stock?

Giveaway - Essie Braziliant Collection! - CLOSED

Hey guys!

I have a special post for you today!

I wasn't planning to have another giveaway until my next big milestone (2000 or 2500 followers) but a lovely PR Representative from Essie offered to send me the entire Braziliant Collection to review. However, since I already own the collection and I've already reviewed and swatched it, she offered to provide the collection as a giveaway prize instead!
I of course said yes and at first I was going to hold on to it until I reach another milestone but since this is a summer collection, I thought it would be better to give it away as close to summer as possible. So here it is! One luck winner will get the entire 6 piece Essie Braziliant Collection!

Check out my review/swatches of this collection here.

Music Video Nail Art Series - Lady Gaga Edge of Glory

Hey guys!

Today I have another music video inspired nail art design for you! This time it's Lady Gaga's music video for her song Edge of Glory. In the video she's sporting a strappy leather getup with gold bolt-type accents and I thought it would make for good inspiration for some nail art.

This time I included a picture of the outfit to go along with my design. So here's my inspiration:

And here's my interpretation:

Hope you like it!

Review & Swatches - OPI Pair 'Em and Scare 'Em Duo for Halloween 2011

Hey guys!

For today's post I was planning to review/swatch the OPI Miss Universe Collection but I was honestly too excited about this duo that I received in the mail on Monday and I just had to try it.

This is one of the Halloween sets that OPI is releasing this year and it includes a bottle of Black Shatter (which we've all seen before) and a bottle of glow-in-the-dark green polish, which is the sole reason I purchased this duo.

I figured that like every other collection, Canada would be behind on releasing the Halloween sets so a friend on Facebook offered to pick this up for me in the US for the same price I would get it for here - I just had to pay shipping. And I'm so glad that I took her up on her offer because I like having new things a little earlier than when they're supposed to be released!

Music Video Nail Art Series - Katy Perry Last Friday Night

Hey guys!

I'm finally back to doing regular nail art manicures!

Last night I was watching a countdown show and for the first time I watched the entire music video for Katy Perry's song Last Friday Night. Her outfit in the video it really awesome and I was totally inspired by it so I decided to create a nail art design based off of it.

Hope you like it!

Nfu-Oh #61 - Back in Stock!

Hey guys!

Just a quick post to let you all know that Nfu-Oh #61 is back in stock on fabuloustreet.com! If this is a shade that you've been wanting, I'd suggest snatching it up right away because it tends to sell out really quickly.

You can see my in-depth review, swatches and wear test for this polish here and hopefully that'll help you make your decision on whether or not you want to get this yourself.

Oh and the Aqua Base is also back in stock (which is kind of sad since I've just finished by reviews of all the Nfu-Oh Holos without it) so if you're concerned about some of the application troubles, you may want to try the Aqua Base as well.

Happy Shopping!

Haul - Wishlist Polishes

Hey guys!

I have a very quick haul post for you today since I'm going to be very busy today and I had a final exam last night so I didn't have time to do up a post then either. However you guys seem like to haul posts so hopefully you'll be ok with the brevity of this post!

I recently acquired quite a few polishes that have been on my wishlist and although I'm still waiting on a few more to arrive, I wanted to show you the awesomeness that I have so far.

China Glaze OMG Polishes: QT, GR8, TMI, DV8, TTYL
I still have a few more shades from this collection on the way but I'm only looking for 1 more now (BFF) to complete the entire collection!

China Glaze Kaleidoscope Polishes: He's Going in Circles, Let's Do It In 3D
Now that I've just about completed my OMG Collection, I've moved onto the Kaleidoscopes and so far I've acquired 2 of 12.

OPI HTF Polishes: Merry Midnight, Movin' Out
These are a couple of hard to find OPI polishes that I have been lemming for a while now and I was finally able to find them for a good price through some Facebook friends.

OPI Miss Universe Collection: It's My Year, Swimsuit...Nailed It!, Crown Me Already, Congeniality Is My Middle Name
I wasn't sure if I would be able to get my hands on this collection since none of the professional suppliers were ordering it (I have no idea why). However I got word a couple of days ago that one of the Winners locations had 2 full displays of this collection so I went down the next day and picked these up. As much as I'm happy I was able to get them, I found it really strange that Winners was the place to have these since I've never seen a full collection display there before. In fact, I've only ever found older random shades at Winners. Oh well!

Look out for swatches of these polishes in the future!

Swatch Comparison - China Glaze Metro Collection: Brownstone, Street Chic & City Siren

Hey guys!

For the Uptown set of the China Glaze Metro Collection I decided to go about my comparisons a little differently than how I did them for the Downtown set.

I'm finding that since this is such a big collection, the comparisons are taking up a lot of my posting and a lot of blog space so I decided that instead of doing individual posts for each shade, I would try grouping three shades together in one post.
This way I'll only have two posts for comparisons of all six shades from this set instead of six individual posts. It's still the same amount of work for me but I'm hoping that this cuts down on a bit of the clutter.

Let me know what you guys think of this new method in the comments - is it better like this or do you prefer individual posts for each shade?

Today I'll be showing you comparison swatches for the first three shades from the Uptown set - Brownstone, Street Chic and City Siren. Be prepared - this post is very picture heavy.

Nails of the Day - Nfu-Oh #66 with a Double Lightning Bolt Accent Nail

Hey guys!

As promised, I polished my nails last night using Nfu-Oh #66 and I added an accent nail to spice it up.

For the accent nail I used Nailside's Double Lightning Bolt Tutorial and even though it didn't turn out as crisp and clean as hers, this is my first time using tape in a mani and I'm pretty proud of it! Thanks for the inspiration Nailside!

Products:
Seche Clear Base Coat
Nfu-Oh - #66 (base)
China Glaze - LOL (first lightning bolt)
Nfu-Oh - #61 (second lightning bolt)
Seche Vite Top Coat

My review post for #66 will be up by the end of the week and then I'll be returning to my normal nail art schedule. I need to start thinking of designs now so that I'll have a few good things to show you once I return to my nail art. Any suggestions?

Review & Swatches - Nfu-Oh Holographic Series: #65

Hey!

I'm almost finished with my reviews and wear tests of the Nfu-Oh Holographic Series and after tonight I'll only have #66 left to review! Today I have #65 for you which is a light powder blue linear holo.

As I mentioned in this post, we have been having really terrible weather here and for the entire 5 days that I have been sporting this mani, we haven't had a lick of sunshine. This means that unfortunately I wasn't able to get swatch photos in the sun like I have been able to for the others. I apologize for that and I'll try to get some sun pictures at a later date. I've still included a number of flash photos to demonstrate the holo effect so you still get the idea of what this will look like in the sunlight.

As I also mentioned, I added some nail art to an accent nail to spice the mani up a bit so hopefully you're all ok with that.

Onto the review!

Swatch Comparison - China Glaze Metro Collection: Midtown Magic

Hey guys!

This comparison post featuring Midtown Magic - a deep burgundy brown base with gold glitter will wrap up our comparisons for the Downtown set of the China Glaze Metro Collection.

Off the top of my head I couldn't come up with any shades that would compare with Midtown Magic, but when I went searching through my stash, I ended up with 2 polishes that seemed comparable.

Review - Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer

Hey guys!

Today I have a makeup post for you!
I've been trying to include more makeup posts in my lineup but I'm finding that I'm buying less and less makeup as the time goes on and I'm buying more and more nail polish instead. However I still have a bunch of makeup that I've stockpiled over the years so I'll try to swatch and review some of those products for you.

Today's product is the Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer and I have been using this particular product for about 2 years now so I think I have enough experience with it to be able to provide an honest review.

Here's a description of the product from the Smashbox website:

"Our oil-free, 60% water-based primer is ideal for oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin. Swatch Comparison - China Glaze Metro Collection: Loft-y Ambitions

Hey guys!

Before we get to the comparison, I added a new poll to my sidebar so please let me know which of my nail art designs you would like to see a tutorial for next.

So we're almost finished with the comparisons for the Downtown set of the China Glaze Metro Collection and today I'll be featuring Loft-y Ambitions - a burgundy shimmer.

I realized today when looking for dupes/appropriate comparative shades that I have a very small number of true burgundy shades of polish; everything seems either too red, too pink, too dark or too light. Nonetheless, I managed to find 2 shades that I thought would make for a good comparison with Loft-y Ambitions.

Nails of the Day - Nfu-Oh #65 with a Cheetah Spot Accent Nail

Hey guys!

I was really hoping to have my review/swatches/wear test post for Nfu-Oh #65 to show you today but the weather has been SO awful here lately so I haven't been able to get sunlight swatch photos. Despite the tip wear which is driving me insane, I'm going to leave this mani on for another day and hope that we get just a lick of sunshine so that I can snap some sunlight shots. If not though, I'll have to do up my post for #65 without any sunlight swatch photos.

Anyways, in the meantime, I have a sneak peak of #65 for you today!
I've recently come to the realization that I really need to have some form of nail art on my nails at all times. I just can't deal with a solid polish colour on my nails - it feel too boring for me now! Thus, when I did my mani with #65 a few days back, I just had to add a little something to spice it up so I did an easy animal print accent nail since I still needed to be able to get good swatch photos.

Products:
China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
Nfu-Oh - #66 (base)
China Glaze - Techno Teal (cheetah spots)
OPI - Black Onyx (outline of spots)
Seche Vite Top Coat

I know I'll be doing some accent nail art with my #66 mani as well and I'm considering giving Nailside's double lighting bolt design a shot. Any ideas for colours that'll look good with Nfu-Oh #66 - a light lime green holo?

Swatch Comparison - China Glaze Metro Collection: Trendsetter

Hey guys!

I'm still chuggin' along with the comparisons for the Metro Collection and today I'll be featuring the mustard coloured shimmer - Trendsetter.

This is the one shade from the entire collection that I thought I wouldn't even be comparing because I didn't think I had anything suitable for a comparison. However, I found a couple of shades that I thought would be appropriate for a comparison with Trendsetter.

Manicuring 101 - The Natural Nail

Hey guys!

Today I'm starting my Manicuring 101 Series which is something I've decided to do because I got SO many requests in my giveaway form for advice on proper manicuring.

First of all, I'd like to clarify exactly what my qualifications are. I am not a "Nail Technician" since that refers to someone who is certified in acrylic/gel nails and I have not yet completed that course. However, I do plan on completing such a course once I finish my University degree (which will be completed in December of this year).

My official title is a "Manicurist" or a "Pedicurist". What this certifies me in is the area of nail care, hand and foot care and the art of manicuring. I can also perform proper hand and foot massages but that's not really something that we'll be covering here.

I did my course with LCN and so I credit all of my knowledge to them. I still have a lot of my pamphlets from my course so a lot of information is coming from there as well as my own memory and experiences since completing my course.

Now that I've clarified upon that, let's get to our first lesson - a discussion of your naturals nails. I'm going to try to keep this first post of the series really brief and basic since some of the discussions later in the series may get a little technical and lengthy, so I want to kind of ease you into it as best I can.
