Classy and Girly Nail Art

So today's mani is based on the theme "Girly Nails" which is the theme of a Nail Art Competition on another board I'm a member of. I think the end result is pretty it's just not really "me".
This is also a very simple design so even nail art beginners can give this one a try if they would like.

(Left hand)

(Right hand)

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• GOSH - Silk (base)
• China Glaze - Rainbow (on top of base)
• Zoya - Nova (pink glitter tip)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Silver Glitter (line under pink glitter tip and on top of black design)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Black Sparkle (black design)
• Seche Vite Top Coat

In certain lights the opalescence of China Glaze - Rainbow adds a beautiful pink sheen to the base colour but unfortunately, my camera couldn't pick it up very well. Ah well, hope you like it anyways!

Haul Saturdays (on Wednesday) - Volume 14 (MAC Venomous Villains)

Welcome to Volume 13 of Haul Saturdays - a weekly post chronicling whatever beauty related purchases I made throughout that week.

I'm posting this volume of Haul Saturdays a few days early to coincide with the release of the much anticipated MAC Venomous Villains Collection.

This week was a big haul week for me because fortunately, my birthday is coming up so my parents and boyfriend were nice enough to give me birthday money ahead of time so that I could get everything I wanted from this collection. They were also kind enough to let me keep my goodies as soon as they arrived so I'll have swatches up later this evening.

Anyway, here's the haul:
(I'm going to break this up into the individual collections, just to make it easier. Also, nothing from the Dr. Facilier part of the collection interested me so there's only 3 parts of the collection below.)

Cruella De Vil
• Lipstick - Heartless
• Lipglass - Wicked Ways and Devishly Stylish
• Eyeshadow - De-vil
• Beauty Powder - Her Own Devices

Evil Queen:
• Lipglass - Strange Potion and Hot House
• Eyeshadow - Vile Violet and Vainglorious
• Blush - Bite of an Apple
• Beauty Powder - Oh So Fair

Maleficent:
• Lipstick - Dark Deed
• Lipglass - Revenge is Sweet and Wrong Spell
• Mineralize Eyeshadow - My Dark Magic and She Who Dares
• Beauty Powder - Briar Rose
• Nail Lacquer - Bad Fairy

Like I said above, swatches will be up later tonight!

Butterfly Wing Nail Art

Hey everyone!

Today's mani is inspired by a design that I have seen around many blogs/youtube channels and that I absolutely love. I also used one of my all time favourite polishes to create the design which is Strawberry Fields by China Glaze. It's such a beautiful raspberry pink colour that's packed with gold shimmer.

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• China Glaze - Strawberry Fields
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Black Sparkle
• China Glaze - White On White
• Seche Vite Top Coat

*I believe that the author of lacquerized was the first to do this design so I'm crediting her with the design, especially because I used the same colour.

Chomp Nail Art

I had so many different ideas floating around in my head when I sat down to do my nails last night and this design wasn't even one of them.
The first idea I had was a Pac-Man inspired mani so I started a google image search to see what I would base my design off of. I don't know how but I managed to come across an image of Chomp from the Mario games and that gave me an entirely new idea. So, I went with the new idea and this is what I ended up with:

I like it a lot and I'm thinking about starting a new series based on this design (Mario Enemies, maybe?). I don't know, we'll see.

Oh and I was thinking about giving the design a little dimension by doing some shading on the grass and trees and stuff but I actually liked the two dimensional effect so I think I'll wait until a day or so before I plan to remove this and then play around with shading.

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• Zoya - Robyn (sky)
• China Glaze - Entourage (grass)
• Orly - Green Apple (tree things)
• OPI - Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees (chain chomp body)
• China Glaze - White On White (clouds, chain chomp's eye and teeth)
• China Glaze - Solar Power (block)
• China Glaze - Ingrid (shading/outline of block)
• China Glaze - Platinum (chain)
• OPI - Red My Fortune Cookie (chain chomp's mouth)
• China Glaze - Liquid Leather (eyes of clouds and trees)
• Seche Vite Top Coat

And by the way, I still plan on doing a Pac-Man inspired mani so keep an eye out for that.

Review - Physician's Formula Bambuki Brush

The Physician's Formula Bambuki Brush is a very large, natural haired kabuki brush with a sturdy wooden handle.

I have been using this for months now and I have really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, I just can't.

It's great that it was super inexpensive (it was on sale for $6 which is really the reason I decided to give it a shot in the first place) but it's not even worth the $6, let alone however much it costs when it's not on sale. My biggest problem with this brush is that the bristles are SO scratchy. It's ok to use if you're being super gentle but if you want to actually buff something out, this just plain hurts! I generally use it to blend my face powders together (blush, contour powder, highlight powder) and I'm definitely not very rough when I do this but it still scratches my face like nothing else.
Plus, it sheds like crazy.

What I do like about this brush is how large the head is which is great for what I use it for and it would also be good for applying product to the entire body (such as a shimmer powder, for example). As mentioned above, it was also really inexpensive so that's also a plus.

I really don't like to be this harsh on a product but when a product is this harsh on me (and my face), I don't feel like I have any other choice.

You can find this brush at any Wal-Mart or drugstore in your area.

Nails of the Day - Nautical

Alright, there's a slight chance that I might be out of my creative nail art slump. Knock on wood.
Today I came up with a nautical themed mani and I'm absolutely loving it. I've even got cute boat steering wheel (is there a particular name for them?) earrings that go along with the nautical theme. :D

Anyway, here it is:

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• OPI - Suzi Says Feng Shui (darker blue diagonal)
• China Glaze - Flyin' High (lighter blue diagonal)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - White (stripes)
• OPI - I Get a Kick Out Of Gold! (anchor)
• Seche Vite Top Coat

OPI - Light My Sapphire with Nicole by OPI - Nicole...Spotted!

Since I'm still in a nail art slump, I've been satisfying my need for fun nails by layering my polishes. This is what I've got going on today:

Light My Sapphire is a black based blue with very subtle silver shimmer and Nicole...Spotted! has a light blue-green base with gold, green and blue shimmer/glitter. Nicole...Spotted! could be worn alone but I definitely think that it's much better as a layering colour.

My Makeup/Nail Polish Collection - Storage Tips and Tricks

Hey everyone!

In this post I'm going to post some pictures of my makeup/nail polish collection and how I store it all.
I posted a full collection post on Specktra and I'll post a link to that instead of clogging up this post with all the pictures (there's over 50!).

I have finally found a storage solution that works for me and my space so I'm very happy with it.

I'll try and go over everything and where it came from, how much it was (although all prices will be approximate since some of these things I have had for a while), etc but if I miss anything or if you have any other questions, let me know.

Ok, let's get to it.

This is my whole setup.
The lamp in the back is from Wal-Mart ($40), my lighted mirror on the desk is also from Wal-Mart ($30) and the mirror attached to the side of the desk (which is a lighted 10x zoom mirror with an adjustable arm) is from Sears ($60).

Keep reading for more pictures and storage tips!

Haul Saturdays - Volume 11 + Blog Makeover!

Welcome to Volume 11 of Haul Saturdays - a weekly post chronicling whatever beauty related purchases I made throughout that week.

MAC:
• Viva Glam Cyndi & Gaga lipglasses
• Back-up of Painterly paint pot
• Lipsticks - Impassioned and Speed Dial (both from Back 2 MAC)

Sally Beauty Supply:
• Back-up of Seche Vite
• Beauty Secrets nail polish thinner

Shopper's Drug Mart:
• Revlon - Belle, Star, and Galaxy glitter top coats
• Nicole by OPI - Scandal, Secrets & Sparkle and Nicole…Spotted! polishes

Also, as I'm sure some of you have noticed, my blog has undergone a makeover!
What do you guys think? Better? Not better?
Let me know!
I really like the new design; I feel that it's more modern and definitely more "me" than the old one. Plus, the margins on the design are wider which gives me more space for the plethora of pictures I post.

Anyways, have a good day everyone, I'm out.

Zoya - Edyta with Revlon - Belle

Hey guys.

So you might remember my manicure from my last post with Zoya - Edyta. Well, last night I was itching for something new (oh and just to clarify, I actually did the original manicure on Monday evening, I just didn't post it until Thursday, I can keep one colour on for a few days without needing something new right away :P) but I really didn't want to take this off so I decided to try adding a glitter top coat over it and see how it worked out.

I added Revlon - Belle which is a new colour released with the Just Add Sparkle Collection. This is how it turned out:

Zoya - Edyta

Edyta is a smokey green with gold and green shimmer and it was released with the Wicked and Wonderful Collection not too long ago.

I wish I could have captured a better picture to show off the shimmer of this but it's so rainy and murky out today that it's just not happening. It really is a beautiful colour though and the application was excellent.

August Favourites

Welcome to my monthly favourites series where I discuss my most used/most loved products of that month.

I've also decided to add a little something extra to my monthly favourites each month - I'm going to add in something completely non-beauty related that I have been into that month. So, whether it be a book I'm reading, a TV show I'm into or a pair of socks I really like, I'll discuss that as well.

Sigma E55 Eye Shading Brush

This is the brush that is supposed to compare to the MAC 239 brush but I have to say, they're in a pretty close race in my opinion. I'm not actually going to compare the two brushes, I'm just going to discuss what I like about the Sigma brush and why it's in my favourites this month.

I like that the Sigma brush has a pretty large brush head so it's able to deposit a good amount of colour - this is great if you're doing one colour all over the lid. As well, it's slightly fluffy which means that you're able to blend with it as you're depositing colour. It's also very inexpensive; if bought individually it only costs a little more than $9.00 CND. It can also be bought in a kit with either brushes, either the Sigma Complete Brush Kit, Eyes Kit, Face and Eyes Kit or you can use their Build Your Own Kit function and add this brush to your own customized kit. Lastly, one of my favourite things about the Sigma brush is that the brush hairs are dark so they don't stain easily.

Price: $9.00 US (which equals out to able $9.35 CND)
Where to buy: Sigma

MAC Blot Powder

I don't have much to say about this product besides that if you have oily skin, this is a life saver, especially during the summer months.

I usually use MAC's Prep & Prime Transparent Finishing Powder as my after foundation setting powder but during the hot summer months, I switch to the Blot Powder as an extra shine control measure and it really does keep shine at bay all day long. This is definitely the oily-skinned-girl's best friend.

Price: $27 CND
Where to buy: MAC

Sterilite Shoe Drawers

Yes, simple plastic drawers are in my monthly favourites. Why? Because I recently re-organized/expanded my makeup/nail station and these drawers have been crucial to my organization scheme.
I now have 13 of these babies at my station and I think they're absolutely perfect for storing makeup/nail polish. Plus, they're dirt cheap which is always a plus! I'm going to be posting pictures (or possibly a video) of my entire setup/collection in the very near future so you'll be able to see just how useful these drawers have been.

Price: About $4 each
Where to buy: Wal-Mart

Criminal Minds

Here's my not-at-all guilty pleasure of the moment - the TV crime-drama Criminal Minds.

I've always been a big fan of crime shows so it should come as no surprise that I love this one as well. However, this one is different and it has very quickly become my all time favourite crime-drama (sorry CSI!).

I love the characters, I love the intensity and I love the story lines but I think that the reason this show in particular means a little something more to me is maybe because it's relative to my field of study. Since I'm (very happily) studying Sociology, Psychology and Criminology, it only seems fitting that I would love a crime show that instead of looking only at hard scientific evidence, actually uses behavioural analysis to solve crimes. Oh I just love it!

If you're into crime-drama at all, I definitely recommend this show.

Price: I got the majority of the full season DVD boxsets for about $25 CND
Where to buy: Wal-Mart
(You can also watch full episodes online on sites such as sidereel or tvduck

That's it for this month.
Have a great day everyone. :)

Nails of the Day - Dominoes

I sat down last night with absolutely no ideas of what to do on my nails. I was even pressuring the boyfriend to come up with something for me! I ended up wasting too much time trying to come up with something that I just got frustrated and decided to do the simplest thing I could come up with: dominoes.

Products:

• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• China Glaze - Liquid Leather
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - White
• China Glaze - White On White
• Seche Vite Top Coat

Cunning, Aristo-cat, Of Royalty, Kittenish

Lipglasses:
Lap of Luxury, Spree

Pigments:
Antique Green, Bloodline, Old Gold

Haul Saturdays - Volume 10

• Beyonce Heat Perfume
• Revlon - Slipper glitter top coat

eBay:

Wal-Mart:

And as always, if anyone would like to see any swatches of anything listed above, just let me know.

Nails of the Day - Rainbow Tips

Alright, some of you may have noticed that for the past week the majority of my posts have been nail related. Well, I promise there's a reason for that.
See, I work full-time at a restaurant during the summer in order to pay for my University which means I can't wear nail polish for the majority of the summer. But, during the school year, I'm a full-time student so I'm able to play with nail polish as much as I want. So, since the semester begins in a few days, I'm no longer working and therefore I'm catching up on all the nail polish fun I missed out on this summer!

Anyway, onto my Nails of the Day. I visited my Aunt last night who loves rainbows and the last time I saw her she requested I do a rainbow nail design for the next time I visited. This is what I came up with:

Products:

• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• GOSH - Silk
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Red
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Dee-Lite
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Yellow
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Mint Green

Nails of the Day - Making the Grade

I decided to continue with the Back to School theme and try a design that someone suggested to me on the Makeup Geek forums (thanks EdenBlue!). This is once again not my design but I like it a lot better than the pencil design since it goes much better with my skin colour.

Products:

• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• China Glaze - White on White (paper)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Baby Pink (the side margin)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Sky Blue (lines)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Red (grades)
• China Glaze - Liquid Leather (paper holes)
• China Glaze Matte Magic Top Coat (all over to give the paper a flat finish)
• Seche Vite Top Coat (I used this only on the letters to give those a little shine as if they had actually been written with a pen)

Review and Swatches - Orly Plastix Collection

Alright, here's the start of my attempt to catch up on all the swatching I need to do. The first batch of swatches I started with is the Orly Plastix Collection.

This collection is a bit of a different take on the matte craze that's happening right now; they're satin finish polishes that have only a semi-gloss to them.

Viridian Vinyl

Purple Pleather

Old School Orange

Retro Red

These dry very fast and are meant to be worn without a top coat (although if you're not into the finish on these but still like the colours, you can always just add a shiny top coat). The formula was good on all of these and each of my swatches is 3 coats. My only problem with these polishes is that because they dry so quickly, unless you work relatively fast in between coats, you can end up with some bubbling.

My favourite of the bunch was surprisingly Old School Orange. I would have thought it would be Viridian Vinyl or Purple Pleather but Old School Orange is just the perfect shade of true orange.

On another note, here's a list of swatches to look forward to from me in the coming days/weeks:

Orly Cosmic FX Collection
MAC Fabulous Felines Collection
Zoya Wicked and Wonderful Collection
OPI Swiss Collection
MAC Viva Glam Lipglasses
