Nails of the Day - Classic No. 2 Pencils

So it's back to school time very soon and I though I would celebrate that using a cute nail design that's all over youtube right now.

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• China Glaze - Solar Power (pencil)
• China Glaze - Platinum Silver (metal band)
• Orly - Elsbeth's Rose (eraser)
• L.A. Colors Art Deco - Silver (detailing on metal band)
• China Glaze - Ingrid mixed with China Glaze - Solar Power (detailing on pencil)
• Seche Vite Top Coat
• China Glaze Matte Magic Top Coat (eraser only)

I actually really dislike this design on my nails and it probably won't stay on that long because Solar Power looks awful against my skin tone. It's a cute concept though!

Orly - Space Cadet

Alright, I started doing swatches of the Orly Cosmic FX Collection a couple of nights ago and the first one I swatched was this one, Space Cadet. However, I fell for this one instantly and couldn't stop staring at my hand so I ended up leaving it on and not swatching anymore of the colours. :P

Unfortunately, the intensity/colour-changing abilities of this colour simply cannot be captured in a photo. In certain lights and at certain angles, this flashes green, in others it flashes a deep purple while in others it flashes a mauve-pink; it's stunning!
The formula on this polish was alright but it definitely needs at least 3 coats in order to be opaque. In fact, when you first start to apply it, you might think to yourself that the formula is just too sheer to ever be opaque but trust me, it'll work out.

I've had it on for a couple of days now though so I'll be removing it soon and then I'll get the rest of those swatches up, along with a full review. (Unless of course I fall madly in love with the next one I swatch as well.)

Haul Saturdays - Volume 9

Welcome to Volume 9 of Haul Saturdays - a weekly post chronicling whatever beauty related purchases I made throughout that week.

MAC:

From the Fabulous Felines collection:

• Lipsticks - Kittenish, Aristo-Cat, Cunning, and Of Royalty
• Lipglasses - Spree, and Lap of Luxury
• Pigments - Old Gold, Antique Green, and Bloodline

(I wasn't blown away with the eyeshadow quads so I didn't get any of those and although I love some of the colours of the new Superslick Liquid Eyeliner, I was on a budget and these were the first things I cut. I would love to try them at some point though.)

From the F/W Nail Trend collection:

• Jade Dragon, Ming Blue, and Rain of Flowers

From the permanent line:

• Pigment - Blue Brown

Sally Beauty Supply:

• Orly - all of the Cosmic FX polishes as well as all of the Plastix polishes

Wal-Mart:

• Hard Candy Walk the Line Liquid Eyeliner - Night Sky

(I have never tried anything Hard Candy but the Wal-Marts in my area just recently started selling the brand so I thought I would give it a go. If anyone else has tried these before and has any input, I would love to hear it!)

Swatches of the majority of the stuff I hauled this week will be up as soon as I can get it all done. If there's anything in particular that anyone wants to see, let me know and I'll work on that first. :)

Nails of the Day - Colourful Camo

Hey guys, I'm here with another NOTD post. This week it's a fun and colourful camo print.

This design is super easy, even for nail art beginners since it's really just blobs of polish. :P And the best thing is that even if you're not comfortable working on your non-dominant hand, this design is perfect for that since you really can't mess up with blobs!
Hope you like it.

Products:
• China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat
• OPI - The "It" Colour
• Zoya - Jolene
• Zoya - Robyn
• OPI - Funky Dunkey

How to - Save a Broken / Split Nail

Recently I had a bit of a nail-tastrophe when I clumsily cracked one of my nails. It wasn't a simple crack or peel at the tip of the nail either, it was a split at the corner at the very beginning of the free edge of my nail, meaning that if I were to fix it by clipping or filing, I would basically have no nail left. And then, since I'm a bit (read: A LOT) anal and can't have my nails uneven, I would have had to cut all of my nails short.
Let's just say, I was not happy.

That's when I remembered that a while ago while at Sally Beauty Supply, I decided to pick up Orly's Nail Rescue kit in case of any nail emergencies. Well thanks past Kayla because this kit completely saved my nails!

The kit comes with 3 products inside - nail glue, nail repair powder and a small buffer. The repair process is a simple 3 step process that takes next to no time.

Step 1: Brush the nail glue onto the entire nail (make sure it's completely clean first and be sure to avoid getting the glue on your cuticles).
Step 2: Dip the nail into the nail repair powder and remove the excess powder.
(Maybe it's just me but during this step my nail felt very hot although that went away rather quickly).
Step 3: Buff the surface smooth.

And that's it! So simple right?! And if you want a little extra protection, you can always repeat the steps over again.

You can now paint your nails with your favourite polish and wait for that break to grow out. It's very important though that you use an acetone-free nail polish remover in between manicures until you're ready to remove the glue/powder because acetone will eat through the glue/hardened powder. However, when you're ready to remove the powder, simply use an acetone formula polish remover and it'll soak right off.

Here's a picture of my polish-free (aside from a little nail strengthener) nails after using this kit:
Can you spot the fixed one?

The Orly Nail Rescue Kit is available at Sally Beauty Supply and it retails for about $8.00 CND.

Hope this was helpful!

Link Love - Volume 9

Welcome to another instalment of "Weekly Link Love".

• You all might remember my recent try at water marbling and how although I love the results, I really hate the process. A few days ago I saw this great video that demonstrates how to achieve the water marble look without asking using the process that I hate so much. I love it!

• Check out swatches of the soon to be released MAC Viva Glam From Our Lips featuring Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga lipglasses over at Vampy Varnish. I know I'll definitely be picking these up when they're available!

• The author over at lacquerized recently did a survey to find out what blog readers are looking for from bloggers. So if you're a blogger, the results of the survey could prove to be useful!

• You've got to see these awesome Louis Vuitton inspired nails over at The Art of Nail. I can't figure out if she used a stamp or if the images are drawn freehand but either way, it's amazing.

That's all for now. :)

Today's mani occurred because I have been aching to use China Glaze - Fairy Dust for quite some time now and I just didn't have any ideas to incorporate it into. So, I just decided to sit down, start playing with colours and see what came to my mind. And this is the result:

My Current Project - Nail Wheels

Hey everyone.

I just thought that today I would do a quick post to fill you all in on something that I'm currently working on - nail wheels of my entire collection. It's a pretty overwhelming task but I think that in the end it's definitely going to be worth it.

The method: I'm creating my wheels first by brand and then by colour. In other words, I might end up having 4 wheels of purple but all will be by a different brand. The reason I'm doing it this way is because that's currently how I have my nail polish organized and I didn't want to stray from that.

Also, I hope to find a neat and professional looking way to label the wheels but I haven't come up with anything yet. As of right now I simply have all of the colour names written down in a notebook.

I got my nail wheels from eBay for next to nothing and at first I only bought 6 (each wheel has 20 nails on it) but after actually starting this project and realizing just how many nail polishes I own, I realized I would need a lot more so I immediately placed an order for 10 more. For 10 nail wheels, it cost me $4.97 CND including shipping which is quite a steal. However, some of you may be able to find nail wheels locally so they may even be cheaper than that.

The seller I got these from seems to have a good few available so if you're interested, here's their eBay seller id: born_pretty

I have already used up my first 6 nail wheels and I haven't even finished going through my China Glaze polishes yet! Mind you, not all of the wheels are full but I'm happy to leave some space on the wheels since I know my collection will only continue to grow.

Here's a picture of one of the wheels I have done so far - my China Glaze Purple Nail Wheel:

If anyone has any questions about any of the above colours just let me know.
Anyway, that's it for now. Hope you all have wonderful day. :)

Link Love - Volume 8

Welcome to another instalment of "Weekly Link Love".

• KeyevE1985 did a makeup tutorial using the new (and from what I hear - totally fabulous) Urban Decay Naked Palette. Yes, I'm still trying to get my grubby little hands on one of these but my hopes are not high. Nonetheless, her look is gorgeous; so simple yet so stunning.

• AllYouDesire posted an innovative and easy way to remove glitter polish without the glittery mess all over your fingers.

• Something that's going to be popping up on everyone's Link Love this week is temptalia's recent review and swatches of the MAC Venomous Villains collection. Let's just say I'm SO happy that this collection is being released around my birthday since otherwise, I would never be able to get all of the stuff I want from this collection.

• Check out a rather unusual article by Musings of a Muse that discusses how sperm is said to be great for your skin - so much so that woman actually pay for sperm facials! News to me!

That's all for today, hope you all have a great day.

Link Love - Volume 7

Welcome to another instalment of "Weekly Link Love".

• You have to watch this super cute nail tutorial done by IHaveACupcake (too fitting, right?) on youtube!

• Check out Turtle Beauty's review and swatches of the very popular Urban decay Naked Palette. I have been trying to get my hands on one of these but Sephora online is constantly sold out.

• Looking for a better storage solution for your lipsticks/lipglosses? Head on over to Jackee's Makeup Bag to see her new storage system that I'm super jealous of. I just might have to take her up on her offer to CP some of these boxes to me since the store unfortunately doesn't ship to Canada.

• Check out a full review and swatches of Orly's much anticipated Cosmix FX Fall 2010 Collection over at All Lacquered Up. I'm such a sucker for duochromes so I'm totally pumped for this collection.

July Favourites

I know I'm a little late with this post but better late than never I guess!
I don't have much to talk about in this post since I have been wearing pretty much the same neutral makeup look all month. However, there's a couple of things I would like to mention.

Benefit Powderflage

This product is described as "a light-diffusing powder concealer for under eyes and face. Benefit Powderflage is a lightweight powder that camouflages fine lines, dark circles, or spots. It can be worn alone for light concealing or layered over a cream concealer for extra coverage."

It may seem like a strange concept since typically it's a makeup no-no to use powder directly under the eyes because of the threat of cakey-ness. However, this product is amazing! I have been using it for probably a year now and it's become one of my absolute staple products. Now, I don't have very dark circles underneath my eyes but whatever darkness I do have, this stuff clears it right up. I don't even use an undereye concealer anymore because this alone does the trick. But, like the description says, it can be used to set an underye concealer for extra coverage so I can imagine that it would also be helpful to those with more difficult darkness under the eyes. Also, not only does it camouflage darkness, it actually really brightens up the under eye area so it's a 2 in 1 type product.

The price of Powderflage may seem a bit steep at first (approximately $35 CND) but believe me, although the packaging seems small, there's a lot of product packed in there and it lasts a really long time. Like I said, I've been using this everyday for almost a year and I only just last week had to open up one of my back-ups. So, I got almost a full year of use out of this great product for only $35, which to me is an excellent deal.

Bottom line, this is a great product that provides great results at a great price.

Price: Approximately $35 CND
Where to buy: Sephora, Shopper's Drug Mart, Benefit's web store

Seche Vite Top Coat

Ok, yes, I am definitely a little behind on the Seche Vite wagon/train/whatever you want to call it but I have finally jumped on and I'm now wondering why I waited so long to do so.
This top coat really does speed up drying time and my favourite thing about it is that it doesn't make my nail polish bleed/drag. You see, because I do nail art pretty frequently, I tend to use several colours and with the old top coats I had used, colours would always bleed into one another, even after waiting upwards of an hour for them to dry. And, being the perfectionist that I am, it drove me absolutely crazy.
Well I don't have to worry about that anymore because Seche Vite has come to the rescue and ensures that my nail art doesn't bleed along with speeding up the drying time!

I have heard some people complain about the smell of Seche Vite since it doesn't smell like a regular nail polish/top coat, it smells more like paint thinner or spray paint. However, I actually like the smell better than the smell of regular nail polish so that's another plus as far as I'm concerned.

Price: Approximately $8-9 (depending on if you have a Sally Beauty Club Membership or not)
Where to buy: Sally Beauty Supply

MAC "Soft & Gentle" Mineralize Skinfinish

I really figured that these would be the same as any other MAC lipglass except for the different packaging but boy was I wrong!

Review and swatches after the jump.

Link Love - Volume 6

Welcome to another instalment of "Weekly Link Love".

• Visit this link to see an absolutelyamazing work of vampire inspired nail art. You'll be seriously blown away, I promise.

• Check out this beautiful eye makeup done by Jackee from Jackee's Makeup Bag. It's stunning and I'm really glad I own all of the products she used because I'm definitely going to have to try and recreate her look!

• EllyBellyBaybee has been doing some great Beauty Basic posts which are super useful for makeuo beginners and even for more experienced makeup fanatics just looking to brush up on their basics. Head over to her blog for a look at these posts.

• If you've got time to waste and you're a nail fanatic like myself, check out the Sephora by OPI Virtual Polish Change. I can't imagine the swatches being very true to life but since I don't have any Sephora by OPI polishes, I can't really verify my assumption. Can anyone else?

That's it for today.
Have a good Sunday everyone. :)
